  • Held Hostage by a Cat: A Morning with Bean

    February 11, 2025
    The Sitcom Called “Mary Jane”

There are morning people, and then there are morning cat people. If you fall into the second category, you know exactly what I’m about to say.

This morning started like any other—I was just about to get out of bed, mentally mapping out my to-do list, when in waltzed Bean. Now, Bean isn’t just any cat. He’s a not-so-tiny Russian Blue, with the confidence of a king, the entitlement of royalty, and the sheer determination of someone who knows they will always get their way. Also, he isn’t really a Russian Blue; he just identifies as a Russian 😉

And, of course, he had just returned from his morning adventures… in the rain.

The Art of Feline Snuggles (or: How I Lost 30 Minutes of My Life)

Bean, in all his damp glory, climbed onto my chest with the precision of a trained assassin. Before I could even protest, he began his signature morning ritual:

    1. The Biscuit-Making Ceremony – Because apparently, my bare skin is the best kneading surface in the house. (Not the blanket. Not the pillows. Just me.)

    2. The Guilt Trip Purr – A deep, rumbling purr designed to make me question all my life choices, including why I even thought getting up was necessary.

    3. The Final Move: Cheek to Cheek Contact – Bean rested his head right on my face with the weight of someone who knew I wasn’t going anywhere.

And just like that, my morning was hijacked.

    Resistance Is Futile

I tried. I really did. But let’s be honest—when a damp, biscuit-making, purring machine plants himself on your chest like he owns you, there’s only one logical choice.

    Stay put.

So, 30 more minutes in bed it was. The world could wait. Bean had spoken.

Final Thoughts (Or: How I Justified This as Self-Care)

Some people meditate in the morning. Some journal. Some go for a jog. Me? I get aggressively snuggled by a wet cat who insists that my personal space is his space.

    And honestly? I wouldn’t change a thing.

  • The Lemon Cake That Never Was… But Might Be? 🍋

    February 9, 2025
    Eat, Pray, Love

Recipe can be found at FoodandBevy.com

Two weeks ago, in a moment of ambition (or maybe delusion), I casually mentioned that I was going to bake a lemon cake for a dear friend who is obsessed with all things lemon. I mean, truly—if it’s citrusy, tart, and bright yellow, she’s all in.

It seemed like a great idea at the time. A sweet gesture. A way to spread a little joy at work.

And yet… here we are. Two. Whole. Weeks. Later.

    Still. No. Cake.

Now, I could keep living in the shame of my unfulfilled promise (and believe me, my friend is not letting me forget it), or I could finally get my act together and go big. Because if I’m going to bake something lemony, it better be worth the wait.

Enter: The Ultimate Lemon Pound Cake 🍋✨

I’m thinking of whipping up a moist, buttery lemon pound cake, soaking it in a bright and zesty lemon simple syrup, and finishing it off with a sweet-tart lemon glaze that drips down the sides in all its citrusy glory.

Basically, a triple lemon threat. Because if I’m finally delivering on my promise, it’s gotta be extra.

But now I’m wondering… do I actually go through with it? Or do I continue to make empty, lemon-flavored promises and see how long I can drag this out? (Kidding! …Maybe.)

What do y’all think? Should I finally put my baking where my mouth is and make this cake happen?

Drop a comment and let me know—Team Bake It or Team Keep Procrastibaking?

  • Why Buying Local Matters — And Why It Should Be A Two-Way Street

    February 9, 2025
    Travel Advice

By Jani Aylsworth-Gunter, Take Time To Travel

At Take Time To Travel, we are passionate about supporting local businesses. But here’s the thing—we believe that support should be mutual. When you choose to shop, dine, or book services locally, you’re investing in your community. And when local businesses reciprocate, the entire community benefits.

    The Truth About Travel Bookings

Let’s talk about how the travel industry works. Did you know that when you book a vacation, hotel, rental car, or tour on your own, a commission is already built into the price? That’s right! You’re already paying a commission fee—but if you book directly online, that fee simply goes to a faceless corporation instead of a real person who could be helping you.

When you book with Take Time To Travel, that same commission is what allows us to provide expert guidance, personalized recommendations, and full-service support before, during, and after your trip. We take care of the details, troubleshoot any issues, and ensure your experience is seamless—all without adding extra cost in most cases.

What Do Travel Advisors Charge For?

While we don’t charge additional fees for most bookings, there are some cases where we do:

    • Standalone airline tickets – Airlines no longer pay commissions to travel advisors, meaning we must charge a small fee to cover the time and expertise required to find the best flight options for you.

    • Highly customized, multi-faceted trips – Some vacations require extensive planning and coordination, such as the Kentucky Bourbon Trail tour I’m currently designing. These types of trips take hours to organize, with multiple vendors and logistics to manage. The reality is that many components of these experiences don’t come with a commission, which means a small planning fee ensures we can devote the time needed to make it amazing.

The Bottom Line: Travel is Our Livelihood

Commission is how Take Time To Travel makes money—it’s how we pay our advisors and keep our business running. If we could afford to work for free, purely for the love of travel, we would. But let’s be honest… none of us have quite hit that independent wealth status yet! 🤣 And with the price of eggs these days, well… let’s just say we’re not giving up our day jobs anytime soon!

    Why Booking Local Matters

When you choose to book your travel with a local agency like Take Time To Travel, you’re supporting a small business that, in turn, supports you. You’re choosing personal service over impersonal online transactions. You’re gaining an advocate who will be there for you from the moment you start planning until you return home.

So next time you think about booking a trip, remember this: You’re already paying for a service—why not actually get the service?

By supporting local businesses, we strengthen our communities. And when those businesses give back, everybody wins.

Let’s travel smarter, support each other, and create unforgettable experiences together.

  • Hard-Shell vs. Soft-Shell Suitcases: Which One is Right for You?

    February 8, 2025
    Travel Advice

By Jani Aylsworth-Gunter, Take Time To Travel

When it comes to choosing the perfect suitcase, the decision often boils down to one major question: hard-shell or soft-shell? Both have their pros and cons, and the right choice depends on your travel style, destination, and personal preferences.

Let’s break down the benefits and drawbacks of each to help you decide which type of luggage is best for your next adventure.

Hard-Shell Suitcases: The Tough and Stylish Choice

Hard-shell suitcases have become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. These sleek, durable cases offer excellent protection for your belongings and are ideal for travelers who carry fragile or breakable items.

    Pros:

✅ Superior Protection – Hard-shell suitcases are made from materials like polycarbonate or ABS plastic, offering a solid barrier against impacts. If you’re packing electronics, souvenirs, or anything fragile, a hard-shell case provides better protection.

✅ Water and Spill Resistance – If you get caught in the rain or have a spill at the airport, your belongings are more likely to stay dry in a hard-shell suitcase.

✅ Sleek and Easy to Clean – Hard-shell luggage tends to look more polished and is easier to wipe down after a trip. No worries about stains from a spilled coffee!

✅ Stackable Design – Since hard-shell cases hold their shape, they stack neatly in storage compartments or when packed in a car.

    Cons:

❌ Less Flexibility – These cases don’t expand much, so cramming in extra souvenirs at the end of your trip might be a challenge.

❌ More Susceptible to Scratches – While hard-shell suitcases resist major damage, they can scuff and scratch over time. If you like your luggage to look pristine, this could be a downside.

❌ Can Be Heavier – Though many newer models are lightweight, some hard-shell suitcases still weigh more than their soft-shell counterparts.

Soft-Shell Suitcases: The Flexible and Functional Favorite

Soft-shell suitcases have been a traveler’s go-to for decades, and they still hold their own in the luggage world. With added flexibility and more storage options, they’re great for travelers who need a little extra give in their packing.

    Pros:

✅ More Flexible for Packing – Soft-shell suitcases have a little stretch, making them ideal for squeezing into overhead bins or stuffing into tight car trunks.

✅ Extra Pockets for Organization – Many soft-shell suitcases come with exterior pockets, perfect for easy access to travel essentials like documents, chargers, or snacks.

✅ Lightweight Options Available – While weight varies, soft-shell bags often have lighter designs, making them easier to carry.

✅ Less Likely to Show Wear and Tear – Unlike hard-shell luggage, soft-shell suitcases don’t scratch or scuff as easily.

    Cons:

❌ Less Protection for Fragile Items – Since the exterior is fabric, soft-shell luggage doesn’t provide the same level of impact resistance as hard-shell cases.

❌ More Prone to Water Damage – While some models have water-resistant coatings, soft-shell suitcases can absorb spills or moisture, which isn’t ideal in rainy conditions.

❌ More Susceptible to Rips or Tears – Over time, fabric suitcases can wear down, especially if they go through rough handling at baggage claim.

So, Which One Should You Choose?

The best suitcase for you depends on your travel habits:

    ✈️ Choose Hard-Shell If:

    • You carry fragile items and need extra protection.

    • You want a sleek, modern suitcase that’s easy to clean.

    • You frequently travel in wet or unpredictable weather.

    🧳 Choose Soft-Shell If:

    • You need flexibility for packing extra items.

    • You love having extra exterior pockets for organization.

    • You prefer a lightweight option that’s easier to squeeze into tight spaces.

At the end of the day, both options have their advantages, and some travelers even switch between the two depending on their destination. Whether you’re a hard-shell loyalist or a soft-shell devotee, the most important thing is finding luggage that fits your travel style.

Which type of suitcase do you prefer? Drop a comment below—I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  • The Morning That Tried To Take Me Down

    February 8, 2025
    The Sitcom Called “Mary Jane”

Y’all, let me tell you—this morning was one for the books.

I woke up with a headache the size of Texas. You know the kind—the “please let this medicine work so I can function” kind. So, I popped some meds and laid back down, hoping for a miracle. Eventually, I pulled myself together, dragged into the shower, and started to feel somewhat human again.

With a fresh face and hair done, I was ready to take on the day. I threw on my go-to combo: jeans, a crisp white button-down, and my sneakers. Look at me, actually put together for once!

    And then… BOOM.

Right there, in the middle of my nice white shirt—a rogue blue spot. From where? No clue. But, fine. This was not going to break me. I grabbed a scarf, covered it up, and kept it moving. Adapt and survive, right?

Now, here comes the fun part. I make my way downstairs, leading my own little parade—Cash, Shelby, and Bean right on my heels. Naturally, I had my hands full: a Coke, my glasses, my phone, and a scrap of paper (because why carry just one thing at a time?).

Then, in a move I could never recreate if I tried, I stepped on the trash can pedal… and y’all—the lid pops open, launching my Coke can straight into the air like a NASA experiment.

    Soda in my hair.

And when I say everywhere, I mean everywhere.

    Soda on the walls.

    Soda all over the floor.

And, of course, all over my white shirt.

I stood there, stunned, for a solid five seconds—just taking in the absolute chaos of my life. Then, without a word, I sighed, stripped down to my skivvies, and started mopping up the mess. Because at this point, it was just another normal Thursday.

Ran back upstairs, threw on something (who even remembers what at this point), and bolted out the door—because obviously, I was already late.

Some people’s lives are dramas. Some are action-packed thrillers. Mine? A full-blown sitcom, and I’m the star whether I like it or not.

Hope y’all had a smoother start to the day.

  • Why You Should Use a Travel Advisor—And Why I Only Plan Trips for Clients Who Book With Me

    February 8, 2025
    Travel Advice

By Jani Aylsworth-Gunter, Take Time To Travel

Travel isn’t just about picking a destination and clicking “book now.” It’s about crafting an experience that fits your dreams, preferences, and needs. And that’s exactly what I do as a professional travel advisor with Take Time To Travel.

But here’s the reality: This is my job. This is my livelihood.

I pour time, expertise, and passion into curating the perfect itinerary for my clients. I research destinations, compare options, tap into my network for exclusive perks, and ensure every detail is seamless. And because I take this responsibility seriously, I only plan trips for clients who are committed to booking with me.

Why? Because the work I do has value—and when you work with me, you’re getting more than just a list of hotels and flights. You’re getting personalized service, expert guidance, and unwavering support before, during, and after your journey.

What You Get When You Book With Me

✨ Insider Expertise & Exclusive Perks

I have access to upgrades, special rates, and added amenities that you won’t find on booking websites. Whether it’s a complimentary breakfast, a room with a better view, or a private excursion, my industry connections bring you more value.

    ✨ Seamless & Stress-Free Planning

Planning a trip can be overwhelming—especially if you’re navigating different time zones, currencies, and travel restrictions. I take care of everything so you don’t have to stress over the details.

    ✨ Personalized Service, Not Algorithms

Unlike online booking engines that give you cookie-cutter recommendations, I take the time to understand your travel style and match you with experiences that fit you.

✨ Advocacy & Support When You Need It

Ever had a flight canceled or a hotel overbooked? When you book with me, I’m the one handling the unexpected. Instead of spending hours on hold with customer service, you can relax knowing I’ve got it covered.

Why I Don’t Plan Trips for People Who Don’t Book With Me

I love helping people experience the world, but I can’t give away my time and expertise for free. When someone asks for recommendations but books elsewhere, it undermines the work I do and the value I provide. My time is just as valuable as any other professional service—just like you wouldn’t ask a lawyer for legal advice without compensation or a hairstylist for a free haircut.

Booking with me isn’t just about securing a great trip—it’s about investing in a stress-free, expertly curated experience.

    Let’s Plan Your Next Adventure—Together

If you’re ready to travel and want the best experience possible, I’d love to work with you. I’m here to make your trip seamless, special, and unforgettable.

Let’s start planning—and let’s make sure your next journey is one worth remembering.

Wrangling the Little Rascals: A Sassy Southern Guide to Traveling with Kids

Well, bless your heart if you’re fixin’ to travel with children! As a mom, gramma and travel advisor, I’ve seen it all—from toddlers throwin’ tantrums to teens rollin’ their eyes. But fear not, sugar; with a pinch of patience and a dash of humor, you can turn your family vacation into a cherished memory rather than a chaotic mess. Here are my top tips to keep your journey smoother than sweet tea on a hot Georgia day.

    1. Plan, but Don’t Overplan

It’s tempting to schedule every minute, but kids can be as unpredictable as a summer storm. Leave room for spontaneity and rest. Sometimes the best moments are the unplanned ones, like stumbling upon a local ice cream shop or a surprise petting zoo.

    2. Pack Smart, Pack Light

Overpacking is a rookie mistake. Each child should have a small backpack with essentials: snacks, a favorite toy, and a change of clothes. Trust me, lugging around heavy bags will wear you out faster than a June bug in July.

    3. Snacks Are Your Best Friend

Hungry kids are cranky kids. Pack a variety of snacks to keep them satisfied. Opt for non-messy options like granola bars, fruit snacks, or those fancy organic puffs if you’re feelin’ bougie.

    4. Entertainment on the Go

Keep those little minds occupied. Tablets loaded with educational games, coloring books, or even a good old-fashioned game of “I Spy” can work wonders. And don’t forget headphones—to preserve your sanity and the sanity of those around you.

    5. Embrace the Buddy System

If you’ve got more than one young’un, pair them up. They can look out for each other, and it teaches responsibility. Plus, it gives you a moment to breathe and sip that much-needed coffee.

    6. Stay Calm and Carry On

Travel mishaps will happen. Missed flights, lost luggage, or the inevitable “I need to potty” at the worst possible time. Keep your cool, and remember, your kids will take cues from you. A positive attitude can turn a setback into an adventure.

    7. Safety First, Y’all

Ensure all vaccinations are up-to-date, and pack a basic first-aid kit. Teach your kids what to do if they get separated and make sure they know your contact information. Better safe than sorry, as my mama always says.

    8. Capture the Moments

Encourage your kids to keep a travel journal or take photos. It’s a great way for them to engage with the experience and creates keepsakes to look back on. Plus, it might keep them occupied for a hot minute.

Remember, darlin’, the goal is to enjoy the journey, not just the destination. With a little preparation and a lot of patience, you’ll create memories that’ll last a lifetime. Safe travels, and may your adventures be as delightful as a front porch swing on a breezy afternoon.

    Bon voyage, y’all!
